Welcome to the Historic Capri Theatre, Performance Venue / Live music / Special Events Listening Room. Far from “Just a Bar.”
A cornerstone of downtown for almost a century. Clemson Small Business Development and many other Downtown research and development groups all agree that the Capri Theatre has been a driving force, a “Catalyst” and has BLAZED THE TRAIL for the downtown revitalization effort. Here at the Capri Theatre we offer many options that include Live comedy/music and theatrical performances. Premieres of local independent films shot right here in the upstate are shown often giving film enthusiast a chance to meet the actors and directors of the films.
We are also available for corporate, civic, receptions and special events, please check calendar for dates.
Our bands and performers are from all over the eastern U.S and some international. Our performers have been seen on Sun Studio Sessions, Austin City Limits, Music City Roots, TV talk shows and Major Music Festivals all over performing their originals.
Historic Capri Theatre “Capri on Main” in downtown Gaffney has reached its 80th year of continuous operation and hopes to keep on going to hit its 100 year anniversary but needs your help with getting there. This fall/winter season with high winds and heavy rains was brutal on the aging roof and needs some TLC. The Capri Theatre opened in 1936 and operated as a movie theatre for 72 years. Single-screen movie theaters are difficult at best to find today and very few exist in their original downtown setting. It is believed to be one of the oldest theaters still in operation in the Southeast.
The Capri Theatre is a venue/listening room for FAMILY and ALL AGES to attend special events and performances, not a bar or private night club with set hrs every night so please scroll down or click the FB links or here for our calendar of events.
On Tuesday nights music starts around 8pm, come by to sit in or to hear local musicians from the upstate and foothills music scene. We do have featured artists to perform in-between the open mic artist from time to time. This is an acoustic/songwriter setting. We limit the amount of full bands to 1 due to slots for solo musicians to play and to cut down on the downtime in-between. If you plan to bring a full band we need to schedule this ahead of time. We encourage local artist from Gaffney, Spartanburg, Greenville, Asheville and Rockhill music scene to take this opportunity to show promoters and venue owners who come by to look for new talent what they have to offer. Some nights we will have showcased artist that include but not limited to; Drew Spencer, Kayla Goller, Eric Towery, Chris Garlock, Jamison Smith, Shane Pruitt, Tony Slaughter, Brian McGee, John Scoggins, Will Moore, Donovan Brooks, Justin Orr, Ali Henderson, Abbey Elmore and many more. Many musicians from all over the country have blogged and promoted us as one of the best live music venues in the upstate.
Members include John Hovelsrud, formerly of Cocktail Frank, Rich Proctor, formerly of The Watts, Depo Provera & Copper Hill. Steve Hyatt formerly of Groove Asylum & Two Dog Walker. Rick Kloskey, formerly of Forgiving Grace and Two Dog Walker
Chicago Blues, Texas Blues, Delta Blues, Jazz Blues, British Blues, Country Blues, and the list goes on. All historically rooted to a region or an era or a specific group of players. All of them popular in their own right. “Monkey Hill” borrows our favorites adds our own unique style and gives our audiences a sample of each.
“Monkey Hill’s” set lists are a melting pot of all the aforementioned genres of the blues, with equal respect paid to the rock, country and jazz music that has also tickled our ears over the past several decades. While still rootsy to its core, “Monkey Hill” represents a modern evolution of the blues, Blues Americana.
At the end of the day, we are four friends who share the same common thread, a love of music, a love of our region and putting a smile on the faces of our followers.
